SOBRE O ANO MUNDIAL DA FÍSICA (extraído de http://www.wyp2005.org//)
The Approach
In 1905, Albert Einstein wrote his legendary articles which provided the basis of three fundamental fields in physics: the theory of relativity, quantum theory and the theory of Brownian motion. The World Year of Physics in 2005 will provide the opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this Miraculous Year while raising the public awareness of physics. Arguably the most famous physicist, Einstein's international recknown will be the natural vehicle to attract public interest.
Organizations
The World Year of Physics 2005 is an international celebration of physics. All organizations and groups interested in promoting physics are encouraged to organize events under the WYP2005 banner. The members of the International Advisory Committee will organize events in their countries in the field of physics. The International Committee will ensure the flow of ideas and information about these activities via the WYP2005.org web site. Many of the activities of WYP2005 will be the sponsored by Participating Organizations
The Challenge
The general public's awareness of physics and its importance in our daily life is decreasing. The number of physics students has declined dramatically. Action must be taken by the international physics community to share its visions and convictions about physics with politicians and the public at large. Physics not only plays an important role in the development of science and technology, but also has a tremendous impact on our society. Although this may be evident to physicists, it is not necessarily the case for everyone.
At the dawn of the 21st century the contributions of physics to other sciences will be essential to solving global problems such as energy production, environmental protection and public health.
The Task
The members of the WYP2005 Steering Committee invite all interested organizations to establish a specific WYP2005 Committee to prepare actions within this framework. In order to gain the full support of political authorities and governments we must act quickly. There are a multitude of ideas and themes, be creative!
Declarations
Beginning at the World Congress of Physical Societies, in Berlin December 2000, more than 40 physical societies from around the world approved the proposal to declare 2005 as the World Year of Physics. This was followed by the approval of the EPS Council in March 2001 to mobilize support in Europe for this initiative. In October 2002, the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics unanimously adopted a resolution declaring 2005 as the World Year of Physics. A number of international organizations have already expressed their support for WYP2005. The 32nd session of the General Conference of UNESCO adopted in November 2003 a resolution supporting the initiative of 2005 as the World Year of Physics.
Inspirations
The most effective actions are very often the simplest to put into practice. Of course, large scale events can also have a huge impact on the public perception of physics. It's all a question of resources. Below are a few suggestions of activities and themes which may appeal to the public. Feel free to send us your ideas to add the lists.
Ideas for activities
Local and travelling exhibits on physics and its achievements. Local events on physics in every day life and integration to existing cultural events. Actions in schools, universities, national and private research laboratories. Interdisciplinary conferences, workshops or symposia (mathematics, chemistry, biology &). Interaction with local industry, technology parks etc. Publicity in newspapers and specialized magazines, posters in public areas and transportation systems (train, buses, airlines), special edition postage stamps, etc. Special proagrames on national and local TV and radio. Publication of a WYP2005 news items in the bulletins of national physical societies. WYP2005 web sites with updated information and forums.
Themes for activities
Promotion of public understanding of physics and physical sciences. Physics in Education. Physics as the basis of many other disciplines and incubator for newly emerging scientific and technological fields. The great challenges of physics for the 21st century. Physics in developing countries and Physics for development. Women in physics. The cultural heritage of physics, from the Egyptian and ancient Greek legacy to modern physics.
