The Automation Brazilian Conference combines the scientific and industrial communities, enabling the information exchange among several professionals in the area of electrical sciences. The conference was held at João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil, from September 09 to 12, 2018, promoting courses, workshops, and lectures to update students, teachers, researchers, and professionals. In addition to bringing renowned researchers, the event brings the most innovative in the engineering world.

The IEEE UFSM Student Branch and IEEE UFSM IAS Student Branch Chapter members presented their work at the conference. The graduate students discussed several topics, for example, discrete time control, machine control, power electronics design and static converters control.

The IEEE PES UFSM Student Branch Chapter organized a really important lecture
about a very relevant theme in nowadays, an overall lecture and discussion on Deep
Learning Applications, provided by MS Roberto Silveira.
At first, the speaker explained general concepts on the matter, providing some superficial
knowledge of the subject. The second part, there were examples developed based on
everyday data/information, to demonstrate how powerful and generic all the methodology can be. 

Caio Ruviaro Dantas Osório, doutorando do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia Elétrica (PPGEE) da UFSM, aceitou o convite da IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), através de seu Chapters and Membership Committee (CMD), para ser o IAS Chapters Area Chair da Região 9 – América Latina a partir de 2019.

A posição de “presidente de área” é voluntária, sendo o elemento de conexão entre os capítulos estudantis de uma determinada região (América Latina, neste caso) e o CMD da IAS. As funções incluem apoiar e promover as atividades destes capítulos (que são unidades locais da IEEE e de suas sociedades, agregando estudantes, pesquisadores, professores e profissionais com interesses em comum), bem como levar possíveis demandas à IAS.

A IAS é uma das maiores sociedades do Institute of Electrical and Electronical Engineers (IEEE). Realiza e reúne eventos, publicações científicas, patentes e outros. Possui como missão promover o avanço da teoria e da prática em engenharia elétrica e eletrônica.

The Federal University of Santa Maria acquired a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) from the company PROLUX Systems Engineering. Together with the device, the company provided a course with the objective of teach about the device and its software. The Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) measure the magnitude and phase of the current and voltage in the connection point.  Using a common time source for synchronization, usually via GPS, is possible comparing measured values from different points in the same grid.

Objectives:

1. Understand the device and communication methodology;
2. Know the main tools of the supervisory software.

This technical visit was held at the INCT in Distributed Generation, placed in the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). This power plant was developed by a partnership between the UFSM, CPFL and RGE-Sul. The implementation of this solar plant will bring great impacts for the development of researches in the field of distributed generation, power systems operation and control. This enterprise is budgeted in R$ 900 thousand reais, with an installed power of 100 kilowatts (kW).

Objectives:

1. To offer to the IEEE PES members a direct contact with a power plant builded in our own university campus;

Workspot is a scientific, technical and professional event about the Electric Power Systems area. It gets together professionals and researchers of universities, institutes, research labs, companies and government agencies proposing the exposition and discussion of the main issues related to the Electric Systems and sharing the researches results.

Developed activities:  During this event it was developed panel discussions, paper’s presentation, tutorials and networking. The UFSM/PES team presented three papers and participated of discussions involving the power system issues and showing the capacity of the Federal University of Santa Maria to help the industry. Moreover, the team made contacts through networking and distributed some material promoting the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grids Technologies Latin America 2019.

The event was organized by the IEEE UFSM Student Chapter, with the intention to provide networking between the Electrical Engineering Graduate Program (PPGEE) students and IEEE UFSM members. The event was held in the Balneary Ouro Verde, that is district of Santa Maria. This place was choosed, because it offers different leisure options to the attendees, as: play soccer, play cards, pool, river bath, etc. A tradition day activity is a soccer match between the students and the professors.

Developed activities:  

• Typical south brazil barbecue;
• Soccer competition;

The event collected a total of R$ 7.435,16, after bought the supplies for the event, there is left an amount of R$ 279,58. This amount was donnated to a child that is treating the cancer in the city of São Paulo.

The first day of mini-courses of the UFSM campus Cachoeira do Sul organized for
two weeks 5 mini courses with contents and softwares and subjects focused on electrical
engineering, bringing news and interaction between students and teachers.

Objectives:
1. The general objective of this event was the beginning of the IEEE chapter on the
Cachoeira do Sul campus.
2. The specific objective was to present the chapter to the campus and demonstrate the
activities that the chapter has to offer to the campus.

Developed activities:
Simulation activities were developed in all minicourses.

The 8th Seminar of Minicourses organized by the PET of the Electrical Engineering course in partnership with the IEEE Chapter UFSM PES had the objective of proposing several courses from November 5 to 16, 2018. In addition to helping in the organization of the event, the Chapter also had members who taught courses, as follows:

3. Design of electricity distribution networks (12 hours):

• Theoretical and practical aspects related to the design of electricity distribution networks;

The activity was an opportunity for networking with colleagues. Before the lunch, the PES Chapter Chair Konrad E. Kork Schmitt, presented a general overview about the activities developed until November and showed the future plans for the chapter.

The Sixth Academic Week of the Electrical Engineering Course of the Integrated Regional University of the High Uruguay and the Missions (URI) – Santo Ângelo – had the objective of proposing six days of activities, being these lectures, minicourses and presentations of projects in the II Works Exhibition of Electrical engineering. It was held from October 22 to 27, 2018 and had the theme “Developing skills with a focus on integration with the market”. Chapter members, Criciéle Martins and Leonardo Fontoura, taught courses in the OpenDSS and Excel programs on October 25, 26 and 27, in a total of 12 hours. Approximately 20 students participated in the OpenDSS (Open Distribuition System Simulator) software course and 25 students in the Excel course.

Developed activities:

• Demonstrate the OpenDSS simulation tool;
• Basic functionalities, focusing on the analysis of distribution systems with and without distributed generation;

Similar to the last year edition, IEEE UFSM Student Branch and Chapters members participated in planning activities of the 11^th Seminar on Power Electronics and Control, which is a traditional event from the Center of Technology. Thanks to the large number of volunteers, it was possible to provide an aid for the organizing committee in different activities, as well as to spread the activities developed by the Chapter in past and future events. Besides that, through the IEEE stand it was possible to provide information about membership, projects and the idea behind the work developed by the Chapters participants.

Objectives:

1. Assist the SEPOC organizing committee.
2. Acquire more knowledge and experience about events organization.
3. Assemble a representative stand of IEEE.

Developed Activities: The support from the Chapter started with the event’s planning through the program elaboration and it was extended by helping the main organizers in the days prior to the event, as well as providing assistance during it. Therefore, the PES Chapter members were able to apply the acquired knowledge and practical skills from the last year edition experience. During the event, it was possible to provide information about current membership magnitude and publicize the Chapter activities, in addition to the motivation behind the creation of PES Chapter in the UFSM. Through the IEEE Stand it was possible to distribute some flyers and expose banners about past and future events participation, where IEEE members were always present and responsible for answering any doubt or question about IEEE, the Branch and the Chapters. At this same stand, it was available discount codes for new memberships to help in the Chapter growth.

O aluno de doutorado do GEPOC/PPGEE/UFSM, Gleisson Balen, recebeu o prêmio de 1º lugar no 2018 IAS CMD Student Thesis Contest - categoria Non-PhD. O trabalho, intitulado "Development of a DC Fast Charge Station with Storage Element for Electric Vehicles", teve a orientação do Prof. Humberto Pinheiro.

Este concurso, promovido pela IEEE Industry Applications Society, elegeu as melhores teses e dissertações elaboradas por membros da IAS, com participantes de todo o mundo. Além do prêmio de melhor dissertação, Gleisson recebeu o prêmio de melhor apresentação no evento, que ocorreu em Portland - EUA, juntamente com o IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE 2018).

The IEEE PES UFSM member, Marcelo Benetti, participated in the XIV SEPOPE (Symposium of Specialists in Electric Operational and Expansion Planning) that took place in Recife, Brazil, in October 2018. This event, which takes place every two years in interesting cities of Brazil, has become a truly international forum for technical and scientific discussions on planning and operation of electrical power systems.

Topics of interest included means to prevent blackouts and reducing their impact, advances in the use of synchronized phasor measurements, the impact on the power grid of renewable sources and distributed generation, integration of wind and photovoltaic generation to interconnected systems, regulatory and energy market issues, impact of huge HVDC links and power electronic devices on power system operation as well as methodologies for generation and transmission expansion planning. System-wide phenomena due to penetration of electronic and harmonic loads were also topics of interest. The reduction in utilities revenue due to recent changes in laws for the renewal of licenses for generation and transmission of electricity were also important subjects for the XIV SEPOPE.

The ample scope and relevance of the issues discussed in the XIV SEPOPE provided a valuable opportunity for extended learning and interchange among professionals from utilities, regulatory boards, planning agencies and system operators, manufacturers, universities, consultants and research centers.

This event was accomplished with the intention of celebrate IEEE day, which occurred on October 3rd. With the development of a stand located in the reception area at the Center of Technology, was possible display the IEEE society, the Student Branch, the Student Chapters and all our activities.

2. Promote the IEEE PES, IAS, WIE and RAS UFSM Chapters;
3. Explain what the IEEE organization and your activities;
4. Encourage the association of new members.

Along the IEEE Day activities, the IEEE Student Chapter from UFSM developed an IEEE stand in the reception area of the Center of Technology, place that has a big visibility for students. In this stand were shown some banners from the Student Branch and its Chapters. There, also was offered some flyers from IEEE, explaining what the organization is, how big it is, its influence and the benefits of becoming a member. During two days it was developed alternating hours between members from the Student Branch, guaranteeing always two members on the stand able to explain and answer any question about IEEE. In the end of the activity, it was possible to promote the IEEE organization and the Student Branch and its Chapters in an impactive way.

In this event Wallace Ascef the Ingeteam Technical Director, lectured about some very pertinent power electronics applications developed by their company, such as:

• Photovoltaic Inverters;
• Eolic Inverters;
• FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) technologies, focused on transmission lines power flow control and STATCOM.

Objectives:

1. Bring to UFSM students and professors important information about power electronics applications in electrical power systems by a company specialized on those technologies;
2. Provide an interaction between students and professors with some new technologies on the market directly by the technical director of a big company of the subject.

In the power systems analysis field of electrical engineering, a per-unit system is the expression of system quantities as fractions of a defined base unit quantity. Calculations are simplified because quantities expressed as per-unit do not change when they are referred from one side of a transformer to the other. This can be a pronounced advantage in power system analysis. Conversion of per-unit quantities to volts, ohms, or amperes requires a knowledge of the base that the per-unit quantities were referenced to. The per-unit system is used in power flow, short circuit evaluation, motor starting studies etc. The course Per-unit Systems Applied to Power System introduced and developed the p.u. systems applied to concepts and themes of power systems field to engineering students.

1. Introduce and develop the p.u. systems applied to power systems
2. Teach and review this classic methodology
3. Resolution of examples and academic exercises
4. Real examples

The High Level Courses focused on the synergy of industry and academia. They unfold in the following areas: Network Cascade, Adaptive Control, Sliding Mode Control, and Power Systems Dynamics. In addition, there was a discussion panel about Smart Cities and Smart Grids, which proved the ever growing need for research in this particular area. Following this, an IEEE UFSM SB partner professor, Fernando Guarda, represented IEEE PES Chapter on the conference, joining discussion tables, presenting his research in distribution systems protection with distributed generation, and collaborating with conference attendees in smart grid related subjects. Moreover, the professor, which is also in the organizing committee for the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grids Technologies Latin America 2019, took the opportunity to invite all the participants to join in the biggest smart grids related congress in South America.

Objectives:

1. Participate in High Level Courses involving the automation and control of power systems.
2. Discuss relevant themes regarding power systems automation and control.
3. Present a Paper.
