He received his Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) in 2018. Currently, is doing his master degrees at UFSM in the Power Electronics and Control Research Gruop, studying control technique applied to Grid-Tied Converters. In 2018, he took his internship in the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS – Division of Adaptive Systems EAS, located in Dresden, Germany, working with LED drivers.

She is currently an Electrical Engineering undergraduate student at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) and a scientific initiation student in the Center of Excellence in Energy and Power Systems (CEESP/UFSM), focusing on the analysis of distribution systems. He received his Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), in 2019. Nowadays, he is a Master’s degree student in the Post-Graduation Program in Electrical Engineering, at the UFSM. From 2015 to 2019 he was an undergraduate researcher in the Electrical and Computational Systems Research and Development Group – GSEC/UFSM, working with research and development on PFC, resonant and dimmable converters. In 2019, he took his internship in the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS – Division of Adaptive Systems EAS, located in Dresden, Germany. He is fellow to the IEEE PES UFSM and IEEE IAS UFSM chapters since 2018 and 2019, respectively. His research interests are power electronics, resonant converters, digital control systems and fast battery chargers.

The project consists of the production of didactic material based on the resolution of questions from ENADE from previous editions. The IEEE UFSM Student Branch in partnership with PET-EE and NTE are organizing this activity.

The idea is to invite undergraduate and graduate students and professors to solve old ENADE questions in a digital board. The short video will be recorded on NTE UFSM studio and they will be available for all the students. The teacher will receive an official certificate of educational material production, that are valid for public tenders.

– The questions are in the area of electrical engineering, control and automation, and telecommunications.

– The video lesson of the resolution of each question will be made on a digital table, in which only what is written and spoken will be recorded.

– Power-point presentations, with the statement and graphics, can be used at the table to assist in the explanation.

– The questions from previous years are already separated in a document according to the area.

We selected some questions and organized based on the subject, to make easy the resolution. Also, we are looking for students that want to participate in this activity.

The IEEE UFSM Student Branch developed in partnership with the student chapters an educational model with renewable energies, energy storage, electric vehicles, the distribution system, and electric vehicle control. The idea is to integrate all the subjects developed into the research groups in the model. The project needs improvements involving Arduino programming and circuit board design to integrate all the renewable sources, the consumers and an energy storage element.

In the model development, the involved students can learn more electronics, control, and automation. Also, the idea is to use the model on fairs and fresh student reception to promote the IEEE UFSM Student Branch.

In addition, the future of this project is to organize workshops on schools to instigate new students to study more science.

Every year undergraduate and graduate students from the IEEE UFSM Student Branch receive support to participate and to present papers in national and international conferences. Some attended events are presented here.

RNR & RNYP

Between 20 to 23 June , 2019, members of the IAS chapter of the student branch of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) were present at the events: “Regional Student Conferences” and “Young Professionals Congress”, of which occurred in the city of Guaratinguetá, São Paulo, Brazil. Participation in the event took place with the help of costs provided by the Society IAS. In this event, the students Caio Osório, Guilherme Hubner e Augusto Zanin Bertoletti attended.

ECCE and Annual Meeting

Between September 29 and October 3, 2019, members of the IAS chapter of the student branch of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) were present at the events: “IAS Annual Meeting 2019” and “ECCE 2019”, of which occurred in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Participation in the event took place with the help of costs provided by the Society IAS and individual prizes for competitions held by the Society IAS.

SEPOC 2019

Between October 27th and 30th, members of the IAS chapter were present at SEPOC 2019 (12th Seminar on Power Electronics and Control). The event took place in Natal, RN. The students presented over 10 papers during the event, all of them from the Federal University of Santa Maria. Moreover, two of the students, Filipe Scalcon and Caio Osório, received a grant for a travel subsidy from IAS, allowing them to participate in the event.

COBEP-SPEC 2019

Between December 1st and 4th, members of the IAS chapter were present at COBEP-SPEC 2019 (5th IEEE Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC) & 15th Brazilian Power Electronics Conference (COBEP)). The event took place in Santos, SP. The students presented some papers during the event, all of them from the Federal University of Santa Maria.

On November 30, 2019 there was fraternization between students and teachers of the graduate program in electrical engineering. Traditionally, students from the IEEE IAS UFSM Student Branch Chapter and IEEE PES UFSM Student Branch Chapter organized a barbecue with all research groups, teachers and their families, allowing a moment to relax after a year of work. A soccer game between teachers and students was also promoted.

The weekly meetings were organized on a fixed day of the week, in the meeting room of the Power and Control Electronics Group (GEPOC) of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. This is the time when the IAS members of the UFSM student branch discussed the activities that could be performed and performed the tasks for the members. Weekly meetings are of great organizational and practical importance. The meetings are in Portuguese and are about 30 minutes long.

Objectives:

– Better organize the planned activities.

– Monitor the development of activities.

– Promote the exchange of experience between members.

SACT XX – Committee Meeting

The lecture entitled “Challenges and advantages of studying abroad”, promoted by the IEEE IAS UFSM Student Chapter in partnership with the Universidad de Oviedo, PPGEE, INCT, and the UFSM’s Technology Center, is attended by the PhD student MSc. Eng. Guirguis Abdelmessih, who carries out his exchange at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, and is part of the exchange program of the Universidad de Oviedo, Spain. The MSc. Eng. Guirguis presents some of his experiences in doing a doctorate in a foreign country and his experience in living in four different countries. Topics discussed include: What difficulties can you encounter? What advantages can you have beyond academic ones? How does your large network influence the quality of your work and offer more chances? In addition, the lecture includes knowledge on how to attend various international conferences and congresses, as well as tips on how to get scholarships.

Objectives:

– Exchange knowledge transfer.

– Knowledge about other cultures and the advantages provided by the exchange, besides the academic ones.

The technical visit at the Santa Maria transformers company – CORFAP, was promoted by the IEEE IAS UFSM Student Chapter in partnership with the UFSM PET E.E. The idea of the technical visit is present to undergraduate students a practical knowledge of step by step for the construction and design of power transformers. A technical visit makes easy to understand contents seen in class in a practical way. The activity provided to undergraduate students contacts in the industry.

After the technical visit, it is expected that students can better understand the theoretical concepts about transformers and their construction. We highlight the possibility of clarifying doubts regarding the content seen in the classroom, directly with qualified professionals and for a long time in the market.

Objectives:

• Practical verification of knowledge seen in class.
• Improvement of knowledge about transformers
• Practical understanding of the assembly and manufacture of transformers
• Relationship between theory and practice involving transformers

The training was carried out by MSc. Ademir Toebe, from GEPOC. The lecturer talked about the software and gave an example of how to design from the ground up a PCB. The course was also broadcasted live and uploaded to YouTube, allowing future students to learn how to use the software tool.

Objectives:

• Give students a hands-on experience with Proteus;
• Allow participants to learn how to work with: libraries, PCB design, gerbers and drills, test and simulation.

In this event, mini-courses and lectures were given to students of the Santa Maria Industrial Technical School. Promoted courses were selected according to students’ interests.

The MATLAB short course was promoted to teach simulation circuit simulation, programming, and mathematical solving for the students. The course was ministered by Felipe Loose, in which the main discussed topics were:

– Vector and matrix manipulation
– Polynomes
– Linear equation systems
– Matlab functions
– Graphics plotting
– Symbolic mathematics
– Simulink

Between the 21st and 28th of October, the IEEE IAS UFSM in partnership with the research group Nightwind, a week of activities was promoted. In this event, mini-courses and lectures were given to students of the Santa Maria Industrial Technical School. Promoted courses were selected according to students’ interests.

The HP 50g short course focused on the operation and programming of the calculator. The course lectured by Guilherme Hübner, allowed the students to obtain knowledge of the main functions of the calculator. During the course, an instructive material was prepared for the workshop.

Objectives:

– Limits, derivatives and integrals solving.
– How to save and handle numeric variables.
– Matrix operations.

In September 2019, the IEEE UFSM Student Branch started the first edition of the IluminIEEE Project. The main objective of this project is to collect LED lamps, repair, and donate them to needy schools in the city of Santa Maria.

To achieve this goal, boxes were made to collect the material distributed in different points of the University, so that people could donate their LED lamps. Thus, donations could be made at the Santa Maria Industrial Technical College (CTISM), at the Technology Center (CT) and at the Center for Natural and Exact Sciences (CCNE). The event was promoted through social media such as Instagram and Facebook and, also, through internal communication between students and teachers.

The LED Lamps maintenance was developed in a joint action of the IEEE IAS UFSM SB Chapter with CTISM, in a workshop held on October 22. The workshop was composed of two parts. The first was theoretical, where students could learn a little more about electronics, reviewing technical concepts and basic topologies of LED lamps. The second part was focused on practice, with students applying knowledge of electronic soldering and electronic components for the maintenance of the lamps.

The workshop had 15 participants and it was possible to recover 18 damaged LED lamps. It is important to highlight that the collection of lamps continues to be carried out and a new edition of the workshop is already being planned.

All the recovered lamps were tested and with the bulb glued back. The lamps were donated to a city public school that needs resources to continue open. The school name is “Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Livia Menna Barreto” and is located at Santa Maria – RS.

The newsletter was a way of spreading events, activities, and opportunities to reach a larger audience. This activity happened through the elaboration of banners broadcasted on the GEPOC reception monitor. They are made each month, illustrating the opportunities in the respective months. In this way, the students could know early the activities and stay updated on the events held.

Objectives:

– Reach a larger audience in congress promotion.

– Present event and activity opportunities.

This activity aims to create a support network for women in the engineering area, besides to approximate the student girls in order to create a stronger community. For this reason, on 14th, October 2019, the first WIE Conversation Circle between women students occurs, and the event had the participation of a psychologistic to facilitate the conversation.

Objectives:

– Create a support network between women students with a common objective.

– Talk and share the difficulties and challenges that all women have to experience every day.

– Find strength and inspiration in other women.

On September 24th of 2019, the IEEE UFSM IAS Student Branch Chapter organized the event which consisted of a lecture given by the Engineer Marcelo Back de Araujo, from GEPOC. The lecturer exchanged experiences with the Software Altium Design. The engineer brought your experience with the software, presenting a didactic example of the use of this computational tool.

Objectives: 

• Promote the IEEE UFSM IAS Student Branch Chapter;
• Gain experience in organizing events;
• Opportunity to acquire technical knowledge from a design tool;

The lecture and hands on training titled “Typhoon HIL Hands-on Microgrid Training” was promoted by the IEEE IAS UFSM Student Chapter in partnership with Typhoon HIL, PPGEE, and the UFSM’s Technology Center. The training was a perfect opportunity to students familiarize themselves with the new possibilities and solutions offered by HIL technology. The training was carried out by MSc. Murilo Almeida, Head of the Microgrids Applications Group at Typhoon HIL. The training was carried out September 19th 2019. The course was also broadcasted live and uploaded to YouTube, allowing future students to learn how to use the software tool.

Objectives:

• Give students a hands-on experience with Typhoon HIL;
• Have an expert from the company answering some of the students questions.

Members of UFSM’s IEEE Student Branch, in particular, PES, IAS and WIE chapters, helped the UFSM professors to organize the event “Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Latin America 2019” (ISGT- LA), which took place between September 15 and 18, 2019 , in the city of Gramado – RS. The event was attended by over 350 students and researchers from all over the world.

On September 17, 2019, in the PRO+E laboratory at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, lectures were organized for the freshmen in electrical engineering and control and automation engineering. The topic addressed was the presentation of the IEEE student branch of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria with a focus on the Society of IAS, RAS and PES and WIE affinity group, all founded at the University. With the lectures, in addition to publicizing the work and activities promoted by the IEEE members, the opportunities and advantages of being an IEEE member and of the mentioned chapters were presented.

Objectives:

– Publicize the IEEE student branch of UFSM.

-Publicize the opportunities to be an IEEE member and of each specific society.

-Publish the activities and work already carried out by the student branch.

On March 11, 2019, the IAS chapter of the IEEE student branch of UFSM was released. The visitation was open to the public, making it possible for all students, teachers, public servants and other stakeholders from the community in general to participate.
