IAS is one of the largest IEEE technical societies, and its interests and main research focus are related to the needs of the industrial and commercial sectors, through advancements in the development, design, manufacture and application of electrical systems, devices and controls to industrial and commercial processes and equipments. It also promotes energy conservation and environmental, health, and safety issues, as well as the creation of engineering standards and recommended practices. IAS has more than 100 Chapters worldwide, and promotes international conferences such as the IAS Annual Meeting, Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC), among many others. Also, IAS publishes highly renowned technical journals such as the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications and the IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, and is one of the main contributors to IEEE Standards through Society Working Groups, having published 25% of all IEEE industry standards. He received the B.S. degree from the Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, Brazil, in 1981 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florian\u00f3polis, Brazil, in 1984 and 1994, respectively, all in electrical engineering. Since 1985, he has been a Professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria, where, in 1987, he founded the Power Electronics and Control Research Group (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufsm.br\/gepocufsm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GEPOC<\/a>). From 2001 to 2002, he joined the Center for Power Electronics Systems (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpes.vt.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CPES<\/a>), Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vt.edu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia Tech<\/a>), Blacksburg, where he performed his postdoctoral and researches on distributed power system. He has authored more than 100 technical papers published in the proceedings of national and international conferences.
