Colégio Politécnico - Universidade Federal de Santa Maria - Santa Maria

10/09/2012 00:00 - 13/09/2012 00:00

The meeting will focus on various aspects of population dynamics and ecosystem functioning and is expected to explore the processes and mechanisms ranging from the micro-scale of individual movement to the macro-scale of populations and communities, with applications to metapopulations, regional dynamics and geographical invasions. It is also expected to explore similarities between the modelling techniques traditionally applied in ecology and those used in other life sciences with the purpose to enhance interdisciplinary approaches and to stimulate further advances in mathematical ecology and population dynamics.

The scope of the conference is outlined by (although not necessarily restricted to) the following topics:

* population dynamics and ecological complexity
* biological invasions and spread of epidemics
* behavioral ecology
* collective dynamics
* individual animal movement
* ecological pattern formation
* evolutionary dynamics
* epidemiology and ecoepidemiology

Travel and Accomodation

Considered the ‘Heart of the State’, Santa Maria is located in the central area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, “Great River of the South”, the southernmost state in Brazil. Despite the European influence, the “gauchos” – the inhabitants of Rio Grande do Sul,- strongly cultivate the traditions of the Pampas — region around the border with Uruguay and Argentina — such as drinking “chimarrão” (a tea drunk in special gourd cups), eating “churrasco” (the typical barbecue) and wearing the traditional clothes which are the “bombachas” (baggy trousers), boots and large hats for men and long dresses for women.

The population of Santa Maria is around 250.000 inhabitants. It is located 280 Km from the States’ capital, Porto Alegre.

Santa Maria in brief:
Area: 1693 km²
Maximum height: 485m
Minimum height: 41m
Weather: Subtropical humid
Population 243.392 inhabitants

Surrounded by national and local highways and a national airport, our city has become an important reference point of study and economic convergence.

  Access to the city

Santa Maria can be reached relatively easy through Porto Alegre.

People from Europe, can fly directly to Porto Alegre by TAP (from Portugal) while people coming from North America, can reach Porto Alegre by COPA (from Panama). There are also direct flights from many South American countries to Porto Alegre. However, the option of travelling first to São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro is also possible; many airlines run regular flights from all over the world to these cities.

Once in Porto Alegre, you can take a flight (by NHT) as well as a bus (Planalto) to Santa Maria. Regular buses to Santa Maria run from the Porto Alegre bus station, which can be reached, from the airport, by taxi (around US$ 10) or by tram called “trensurb”.

Some buses will be organised to run from the airport at Porto Alegre to Santa Maria, timed to connect with intercontinental flights.
