The conference \u201cSimondon\u2019s Thought in the Global South\u201d will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, in partnership with the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil, on the 7th and 8th of October 2024. This hybrid event, accessible both in person and online, will feature a diverse program, including a keynote lecture, panel discussions, workshops, and the \u201cQuantum Echoes of Humanity\u201d exhibition presented by WITS and LabInter\/UFSM. The conference aims to explore Gilbert Simondon\u2019s philosophy, with a particular focus on the specificities of individuation processes in the Global South and their relationships with emerging technologies. This represents a deterritorializing reterritorialization of Simondon\u2019s philosophy, where different historical, cultural, and technological conditions exist.\u00a0<\/p>

Examining the concept of individuation from a Global South perspective necessitates a historical review of philosophical thought. To conceptualise individuation distinctly from substantialism, hylomorphism, and Hegelian idealism, Simondon introduces in his landmark work,\u00a0Individuation in Light of Notions of Form and Information<\/i>\u00a0(1958), a novel concept that serves as the foundation and origin of all individuation. For him, unity and identity, essential for the existence of an individuated being, arise as dynamic consequences of the process of ontogenesis. His critique of traditional metaphysical concepts lays the groundwork for a processual approach to understanding the emergence of beings as individuation.\u00a0<\/p>

Gilbert Simondon constructs a sophisticated theory aimed at overturning traditional ontological notions. Interested in developing a philosophy that transcends disciplinary boundaries, Simondon\u2019s interdisciplinary approach is unified by a unique theory of individuation. He re-conceptualizes individuation as an ongoing, never-ending process in which the individual mediates between two disparate orders of magnitude. Simondon\u2019s worldview is dynamic rather than static, understanding the world in terms of processes rather than fixed principles. Individual beings are viewed as singular phases within the ongoing process of individuation, perpetually open to becoming.<\/p>

In celebration of the centenary of Gilbert Simondon\u2019s birth, we pose the question: Why is Simondon\u2019s thought relevant in the current context of the Global South? We recognize that Simondon opened new avenues of philosophical inquiry directly applicable to the modern technological world. He plays a crucial role in developing philosophical ideas about technology as the co-constitution of society in a techno-social individuation with the artefacts it develops within its environment. His second doctoral thesis,\u00a0The Mode of Existence of Technical Objects<\/i>\u00a0(1958), addresses many concerns about technological alienation and the construction of technical objects in balance with production processes.\u00a0<\/p>

Simondon\u2019s work provides a new approach that integrates culture, technology, and nature, countering alienated, universal, and hegemonic modern thought. He provides a rich theoretical framework to rethink the relation of the individual and the social as technological mediation. This conference seeks to deepen the understanding of Simondon\u2019s relevance, examining how his ideas can inform contemporary technological and social challenges in the Global South.<\/p>

MetaGeoparques – Po\u00e9tica colaborativa integrada ao Planejamento Urbano<\/strong> – Compreendendo o Geoparque Quarta Col\u00f4nia e o Geoparque Ca\u00e7apava como territ\u00f3rios f\u00e9rteis para o um desenvolvimento criativo e sustent\u00e1vel, visa-se conectar estes Geoparques com proposi\u00e7\u00f5es po\u00e9ticas, conjugando e associando pesquisa e extens\u00e3o. O projeto MetaGeoparques fortalece pr\u00e1ticas colaborativas integradas ao planejamento urbano, fortalecendo a premissa do reconhecimento dos Geoparques pela UNESCO, com a preserva\u00e7\u00e3o da \u201cmem\u00f3ria da terra\u201d, dos sentidos e viv\u00eancias locais. O Circuito Urbano 2022 tem como tema \u201cLocalizando os ODS: N\u00e3o deixar ningu\u00e9m e nenhum lugar para tr\u00e1s\u201d, ao buscar ativar a vida nas cidades a partir de a\u00e7\u00f5es que envolvem a inclus\u00e3o de comunidades vulner\u00e1veis; que propiciam a apropria\u00e7\u00e3o do espa\u00e7o urbano e rural pela conscientiza\u00e7\u00e3o sonora; que integram a realidade virtual e a f\u00edsica atrav\u00e9s de propostas coletivas e colaborativas em realidade virtual e aumentada; que auxilia na capacita\u00e7\u00e3o de popula\u00e7\u00f5es para a redu\u00e7\u00e3o de desigualdades, entre outros fatores. TRANSMISS\u00c3O, TRANSFER\u00caNCIA E CONEX\u00c3O: ARQUIVOS E DOCUMENTOS COMO PO\u00c9TICA ART\u00cdSTICA <\/span><\/strong>– <\/span>A arte de arquivo, na atualidade, est\u00e1 menos preocupada com uma originalidade fiel e absoluta dos arquivos e se encontra mais focada nos desvios poss\u00edveis e desconhecidos que possam ser trilhados. H\u00e1 um interesse dos artistas por projetos incompletos e come\u00e7os incertos, proporcionando outros pontos de partida e outras narrativas a partir do uso de arquivos e documentos como elemento est\u00e9tico e conceitual. A produ\u00e7\u00e3o art\u00edstica contempor\u00e2nea atrelada \u00e0 linguagem da fotografia, do v\u00eddeo, das m\u00eddias digitais e da rede online veio a contribuir na po\u00e9tica dos artistas que se engajam em trabalhos de cunho arquiv\u00edstico. O ONU-Habitat (Programa das Na\u00e7\u00f5es Unidas para os Assentamentos Humanos\u00a0) realiza, todos os anos, o\u00a0Outubro\u00a0Urbano.\u00a0O m\u00eas se inicia com o Dia Mundial do Habitat (na primeira segunda-feira do m\u00eas \u2013 em 2020, no dia 05 de outubro) e se encerra com o Dia Mundial das Cidades (31 de outubro). O Outubro Urbano conta sempre com dois temas selecionados para estimular o debate entre diversos setores sobre como tornar a vida nas cidades melhor para todas e todos. Em 2020, o Dia Mundial do Habitat abordou o tema da\u00a0\u201cHabita\u00e7\u00e3o para todas e todos: um futuro urbano melhor\u201d\u00a0e o Dia Mundial das Cidades focou no tema\u00a0\u201cValorizando nossas comunidades e cidades\u201d.<\/p>

Para promover o debate sobre os temas do Outubro Urbano de cada ano em todo o Brasil, o escrit\u00f3rio do ONU-Habitat no Brasil criou, em 2018, o Circuito Urbano: uma iniciativa para apoiar institucionalmente e dar visibilidade a eventos organizados por diversos atores.<\/p>

Em 2020, a 3\u00aa edi\u00e7\u00e3o do Circuito Urbano foi realizada de forma totalmente virtual. Para aproveitar as vantagens da modalidade online e aprofundar o interc\u00e2mbio de experi\u00eancias e conhecimentos, a edi\u00e7\u00e3o foi realizada em parceria com os escrit\u00f3rios do ONU-Habitat em Pa\u00edses Africanos de L\u00edngua Oficial Portuguesa. Dessa forma, o Circuito Urbano 2020 se centrou no tema\u00a0\u201cCidades P\u00f3s-COVID-19: Di\u00e1logos entre o Brasil e a \u00c1frica lus\u00f3fona\u201d\u00a0e os eventos puderam abordar como subtemas as quest\u00f5es trazidas pelo Dia Mundial do Habitat e o Dia Mundial das Cidades.<\/span><\/p>

Arte Comunit\u00e1ria<\/strong> – Ao interligar os temas Arte, Tecnologia, \u00c9tica e Comunidade, aborda pr\u00e1ticas art\u00edsticas atuais que trazem em suas metodologias processos inclusivos e rec\u00edprocos entre os agentes participantes, no sentido de ativar o comum de cada comunidade. Pr\u00e1ticas que, a partir de cartografias contempor\u00e2neas, buscam a cria\u00e7\u00e3o de redes colaborativas em que a empatia e o senso de responsabilidade com o outro geram uma consci\u00eancia coletiva nas cidades. Monumentos Virtuais: Mem\u00f3ria, Arte e Tecnologia Colaborativa e Transnacional<\/strong>\u00a0– Roda de conversa virtual sobre o projeto colaborativo e transnacional de arte e tecnologia \u201cMonumentos Virtuais\u201d, uma parceria entre Brasil e \u00c1frica do Sul. Realiza\u00e7\u00e3o que parte de registros em \u00e1udio e v\u00eddeo do habitat urbano das cidades Brasileiras de Santa Maria (RS) e Fortaleza (CE), e da cidade sul-africana de Durban. A proposta visa repensar as mem\u00f3rias dos povos envolvidos, experimentando m\u00eddias emergentes e formatos expositivos, como proje\u00e7\u00e3o em c\u00fapulas de planet\u00e1rios, telas panor\u00e2micas em 360\u00ba e v\u00eddeo mapping. Agora, \u201cMonumentos Virtuais\u201d refor\u00e7a a parceria com a cidade de Salvador (BA), abre-se tamb\u00e9m ao p\u00fablico atrav\u00e9s das conex\u00f5es em redes online, valorizando as mem\u00f3rias ef\u00eameras do habitar cotidiano em tempo de pandemia de COVID19.
