As aulas tiveram in\u00edcio no dia 11 de agosto de 2014 e, no dia 20 de agosto, ocorreu a solenidade oficial de inaugura\u00e7\u00e3o do campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provisoriamente as atividades do campus da UFSM em Cachoeira do Sul se realizaram em cinco im\u00f3veis no centro da cidade, at\u00e9 que os primeiros pr\u00e9dios do campus, no Bairro Passo da Areia, foram inaugurados. Em seu campus definitivo, a UFSM-CS conta com uma \u00e1rea f\u00edsica de aproximadamente 84 hectares.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A UFSM em Cachoeira do Sul iniciou suas atividades com cinco cursos de gradua\u00e7\u00e3o: <\/span><b>Arquitetura e Urbanismo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Engenharia Agr\u00edcola<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Engenharia El\u00e9trica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Engenharia Mec\u00e2nica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; e <\/span><b>Engenharia de Transportes e Log\u00edstica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; totalizando o ingresso semestral de 190 alunos.<\/span><\/p><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufsm.br\/unidades-universitarias\/cachoeira-do-sul\/\" capital do Estado. Com terras f\u00e9rteis e a presen\u00e7a do rio, as principais atividades econ\u00f4micas s\u00e3o a agricultura e a pecu\u00e1ria. A popula\u00e7\u00e3o cachoeirense (cerca de 85.600 habitantes) \u00e9 uma mescla de v\u00e1rias etnias. A partir de 1750, esta regi\u00e3o foi ocupada por soldados portugueses vindos de S\u00e3o Paulo e que receberam sesmarias do governo de Portugal. Em 10 de julho de 1779, a povoa\u00e7\u00e3o foi elevada \u00e0 freguesia com o nome de Freguesia de S\u00e3o Nicolau da Cachoeira de San Jos\u00e9 e, dois anos depois, passou \u00e0 invoca\u00e7\u00e3o de Nossa Senhora da Concei\u00e7\u00e3o. A imigra\u00e7\u00e3o alem\u00e3 ocorreu a partir de 1857; a imigra\u00e7\u00e3o italiana, pr\u00f3ximo a 1880.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Em 1819, a ent\u00e3o Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Concei\u00e7\u00e3o foi emancipada da Vila de Rio Pardo. A instala\u00e7\u00e3o do munic\u00edpio ocorreu em 5 de agosto de 1820. Em 15 de dezembro de 1859 o munic\u00edpio foi elevado \u00e0 categoria de Cidade, recebendo o nome de Cachoeira. Localizada sobre o rio Botucara\u00ed \u00e9, segundo o historiador Aur\u00e9lio Porto, a primeira ponte deste tipo constru\u00edda no Rio Grande do Sul. Foi, durante muito tempo, o principal acesso de Cachoeira para Porto Alegre e Rio Pardo. Dava passagem \u00e0s tropas e proporcionava o escoamento da produ\u00e7\u00e3o e a sua comercializa\u00e7\u00e3o com importantes munic\u00edpios. O povo costuma dizer que a ponte foi constru\u00edda para D. Pedro II passar, o que n\u00e3o \u00e9 ver\u00eddico.
