Cadmium is an environmental contaminant mainly from steelmaking, thus contaminating soils and consequently water, plants and animals. It is also present in agricultural fertilizers, in plant foods (cereals, onions, potatoes, beans and corn) and in seafood. Its acute toxic effects are characterized by vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain, while the chronic exposure may lead to kidneys damage (renal syndrome) and changes in the metabolism of calcium and of bone tissue (Itai-itai disease).
