Affordances in Between

Abstract. Affordances are usually defined as possibilities for action the environment provides for an individual. However, some possibilities for action are provided not to individuals, but for groups. Lifting a large rock may not be possible for me alone, but it could be possible if I combined my efforts with others. Is that a possibility for action the rock affords us? And, if so, can there be intersubjective affordances? In this paper I argue for a positive answer. My proposal draws on the enactive notion of a sensorimotor body (Di Paolo et al., 2017) understood as a system of mutually supporting sensorimotor schemes. That notion has been expanded into the notion of an intersubjective body conceived as a system of mutually supporting sensorimotor schemes that spans across more than one individual (Di Paolo et al., 2018). I argue that intersubjective affordances can be understood as possibilities for action for an intersubjective body. Finally, I draw on Fuchs’ (2020) embodied account of perception of value to explain how intersubjective affordances can be perceived by individuals.
