Types of Accept Manuscripts

Ciência Rural (CR), the scientific journal of the Centro de Ciências Rurais da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria , publishes original research articles, review papers, and short communications in the field of Agricultural Sciences. Submissions must be exclusive.

Research articles, review papers, and short communications must be submitted electronically and preferably written in English. Manuscripts submitted in Portuguese may be translated after the first round of review so that they can still be evaluated by ad hoc reviewers and the Associate Editor in a subsequent round. However, if they are not translated at this stage and are accepted for publication, they must be translated into English by companies accredited by Ciência Rural, and a translation certificate must be provided for the manuscript to proceed in the journal’s editorial process.

DOI (Digital Object Identifier) for published manuscripts

All manuscripts accepted for publication in Ciência Rural (CR) will be assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) upon final publication.

Authors’ Contributions

Authors’contributions must be described using one of the following examples:

Example 1
All authors’ contributed equally to the conception and writing of the manuscript. All authors critically revised the manuscript and approved the final version.

Example 2
All authors’ contributed equally to the manuscript.

Manuscript Preparation

Research papers (template: .doc, .pdf) must include the following sections: Title (Portuguese and English); Abstract (Portuguese and English); Keywords (Portuguese and English); Introduction with Literature Review; Materials and Methods; Results and Discussion or Results/Discussion (combined); Conclusion; Acknowledgments; Conflict of Interest Statement; Authors’ Contributions; Funding Sources; Verbal Report; Ethics and Biosafety Committee; Data Availability Statement; Supplementary Material; Declaration of Use of Artificial Intelligence; and References.

Studies involving human or animal subjects must include approval from an institutional ethics committee at the time of submission.

Ciência Rural accepts electronic multimedia files (animations, images, tables, videos, audio, etc.) and other supplementary material to be published online alongside articles, short communications, and review papers. These materials may provide additional information to the manuscript. If authors wish supplementary material to be considered as part of the manuscript, the data must be deposited in a permanent repository.

In the manuscript, authors must include a section titled “Supplementary Material” with the link for access to the data. Authors’ are fully responsible for ensuring the long-term availability of the information in the repository.

After the Conclusion, the following sections must be included: Acknowledgments; Conflict of Interest Statement; Author Contributions; Funding Sources; Verbal Report; Ethics and Biosafety Committee; Data Availability Statement; Supplementary Material; Declaration of Use of Artificial Intelligence; and References.

Titles

Provide the title in Portuguese and English (if the manuscript is in Portuguese) or in English and Portuguese (if the manuscript is in English). Only the first letter of the article title should be capitalized, except for proper nouns. Avoid abbreviations and scientific names in the title. Scientific names should only be used when strictly necessary and should instead appear in the keywords, abstract, and other sections when appropriate.

Lines must not be numbered, and pages must not include page numbers. The manuscript must be formatted on A4 paper (210 × 297 mm), with a maximum of 25 lines per page, double-spaced, with 2.5 cm margins on all sides, using Times New Roman font, size 12.

Page limits

The maximum number of pages is as follows:

15 pages for research papers;
20 pages for review papers;
8 pages for short communications, including tables, figures, and references.

Figures and tables must be placed at the end of the text, each on a separate page, and must not exceed the margins or be presented in landscape format. Graphs should be treated as figures, and charts as tables.

Considering the electronic publication format, manuscripts exceeding the limits above may be considered. However, accepted manuscripts with excess pages will incur additional publication charges (see fees).

Manuscript Submission Format

Manuscripts must be submitted in “.doc” format.

Digital Assets

Drawings, graphs, and photographs:

Drawings, graphs, and photographs are referred to as figures and must be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals. The journal does not use the term “plates.” Figures must be provided individually, one per page. Drawings, figures, and graphs (with a maximum width of 16 cm) must be created using graphic editing software, at maximum quality, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, in .tiff format.

Tables must include the word “Table” followed by the corresponding number in Arabic numerals and must not exceed one page, maintaining consistent font and size.

Citations and References

References and citations must follow the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards) guidelines.

Citations

Citations must be indicated in the text using the author–year system. This format must be applied consistently throughout the manuscript, allowing proper correspondence with the reference list.

1) Individual authors:
Citations must be indicated by the author’s surname in uppercase letters.

Example 1
Irony can thus be understood as an implicit form of marked heterogeneity, according to the classification proposed by AUTHIER-REVUZ (1982).

Example 2
“Despite appearances, the deconstruction of logocentrism is not a psychoanalysis of philosophy […]” (DERRIDA, 1967).

2) Institutional authors:
Citations must be indicated by the full name or acronym of the institution, in uppercase letters.

Example 1
“The promotion and protection of health are essential for human well-being and for sustainable economic and social development” (WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, 2010).

Example 2
“During the 15th century, the Portuguese decided that the best way to prosper economically was to break the monopoly of Italian cities by negotiating directly with the East” (IBGE, 2011).

3) Government institutions (direct administration):
Citations must be indicated by the name of the higher authority or by the jurisdiction to which it belongs.

Example
In the text:
The mechanism proposed to enable this approach is the so-called Management Contract, which would allow the attraction of private funding as a way to reduce public investment in higher education (BRAZIL, 1995).

In the reference list:

4) Papers with three or more authors:
For sources with three or more authors, cite the first author followed by et al. The same format must be used in the reference list. All citations must be standardized throughout the document.

Example 1 – (More than two authors)
According to MACIEL et al. (2019), “test results showed a higher prevalence (66.2%) of body image dissatisfaction (BSQ results) and a lower proportion (27.78%) at risk of developing eating disorders (EAT-26 results) […]”.

Example 2 – (Up to two authors)
According to MACIEL and BRUM (2019), “test results showed a higher prevalence (66.2%) of body image dissatisfaction (BSQ results) and a lower proportion (27.78%) at risk of developing eating disorders (EAT-26 results) […]”.

5) Responsibility indication, when presented in parentheses, must be accompanied by the year of publication.

Example 1

In fact, a similar approach to this issue would carry the risk of considering literature merely as another source of content already available elsewhere for theology (JOSSUA; METZ, 1976).

Example 2

“First, support for the independence of colonial peoples was already evident in Brazilian society” (SANTOS, 2005).

6) For authors with the same surname and year of publication, distinctions must be made by adding lowercase letters in alphabetical order after the year, without spacing, according to the reference list.
