Resumo
Epistemic generationism about memory holds that memory can both preserve and generate epistemic status. In contrast, preservationism holds that memory is a conduit rather than a source: it transmits justification and knowledge already established by other cognitive faculties but never improves on them. This paper offers a new argument for generationism, centred on the concept of epistemic neutrality. The core claim is that unconscious perceptual processing can register informational content that is, initially, neither justified nor unjustified, because it stands outside the domain of epistemic evaluation having never been endorsed as a belief. Memory generates justification when it reliably retrieves this neutral content and converts it, for the first time, into a justified belief. This conversion establishes what we call a support relation between the stored content and the newly formed belief, and it is from this relation that justification emerges rather than being transferred from any prior state. We distinguish this account from Lackey’s (2005) original generativist proposal, defend it against objections from entitlement-based preservationism, phenomenal conservatism, and the epistemic boost problem, and show that Modal Preservationism (Bernecker & Silva, 2026) survives existing objections only by conceding, under a modal guise, precisely what generativism asserts.
